Oceana continues to have a strong rehab focus with Optimum Health Solutions Tasmania now based at Oceana. Oceana was always developed to include the aquatic and gym based equipment suited to rehab.
Dean has been actively involved in promoting the preventative health agenda and fitness industry development with peak body, Fitness Australia, and within the Tasmanian health and fitness sector for over 25 years. Telstra Small Business of The Year
Oceana Health & Fitness was a category winner in the 1999 Telstra Tasmanian Government Small Business of the Year awards. We won the Business owner award for businesses with less than 50 employees. We have also won awards from Business East for customer service.
The Telstra Small Business award was quite a remarkable achievement as Oceana aquatic & Fitness was the first health club to win an award in any state and occurred after only 2 and a half years of opening.
Back in 1996 the fitness landscape was a lot different.
There were no 24 hour clubs, no Aquatic Centre, Friends, Clarence Pool still had the bubble roof, and no one ran boot camp sessions in local parks.
In fact there were only a handful of Personal Trainers in Hobart and Fitness centres were just box boxes full of equipment. Oceana was much the same and we enjoyed steady growth and good membership and swim school numbers for the first 10 years or so.
So as things have changed over the 20 years, so has Oceana. We have added new programs and equipment, changed our layout, built on, upgraded plant and equipment and continued to keep up to date with the latest trends.
With increased competition in all fitness services we have gradually changed our operations to be focussed on small group supervised training with a focus on functional exercise. We have done that because we believe it is simply the best value, most effective way to get results.
This move to include functional training started with our purpose built “BootCamp” area in 2008
This space had an obstacle course and an outside running track to link to our main gym area, and was used for the next few years to run boot camps. We then modified it in 2012 to remove the obstacle course to create more open space and add some new equipment.
We then went 24 hour in our gym in 2014 which has been well received by many with hectic lifestyles and shift workers.
We also modified our old aerobics area to create another functional training space around the same time. We expanded the lower gym area to include more space for functional and free weight exercise.
Upgrade of Pools
We upgraded the pool water heat pumps in 20014 and the filters, and an automated chlorine and ozone system in 2015 to make sure we have the best quality water and the best temperature for learn to swim. We also added a “false bottom” to the hydro pool in 2015 to create more teaching space for our babies program. This involved a significant investment but we have not finished yet.
This will include new flooring with markings that make functional workouts easier to program for and easier to follow for participants, it will also add a new layer of exercises to our program. This will make our new Ozone the best functional workout space In Hobart.
Our renovations are well underway with the new OZONE now back inside the main gym on the upper level. The new Pavigym flooring is not here as yet but will be by the end of November. Some minor cosmetic changes are still required.
The lower gym as had a new timber look vinyl floor installed and our new cardo gear is also in place in the main lower gym area and we are just adding the finishing touches to the room with painting etc.
New Baby/Toddler Teaching Pools will be added to create the best possible teaching space in Hobart. We will also be adding extra changerooms for our Baby/Toddler program.
New equipment will be added to both areas as well as our Personal training Studio. We wanted to make the changes first and see how it all fits and then add extra bars, mates, storage racks etc sow e make it work as we want.
We will keep you updated on changes of check out our facebook page for more info.
Our Key staff have been at Oceana for many years as well. They are the backbone of our operations and play a key role in making Oceana the quality business that we aim to be.
Head Coach – Marcello Marchioli
I am the Head Coach or Fitness Director here at Oceana.
I have been working here for well over a decade now and still have the passion that drove me back when I was a kid and just starting out.
I have had a few health issues throughout my time working here at Oceana, but with constant support from my work colleagues, family and my beautiful partner Josh, I have been able to create a positive mindset. I am certainly a person/trainer that is all about mindset and that has a flow effect with my style of training. You need to work with what you have and not feel sorry for yourself, get up, do something and stop over thinking life and live it.
My role as fitness director is to make sure that every client at Oceana is receiving the care and help that our club has become known for. To do this a lot of honesty and some tough love is needed at times, but at the end of the day your achievements are what I’m here for.
Chief Swim Schooler – Jacki Dent
After completing my Health Science degree at UTAS in Launceston I have been working at Oceana in both fitness and swim departments for the past 3 years. I was appointed Swim School Manager 18 months ago and I love the opportunity that it gives me to continue my involvement in swimming and coaching.
I have grown up in a pool environment, starting off racing for Lindisfarne Sharks Swim Club then into playing water polo in the state and national league. In the past couple of years I have travelled with and coached state polo teams as I really enjoy watching the improvement from start to the finish of their competition.
I take enormous pleasure in helping our kids improve their swimming skills and also working with our new teachers, who also need some coaching from time to time.
We have a fantastic bunch of passionate teachers who love what they do and take a lot of pride in contributing to what we know is a huge part of any child’s education
Lee Albert – Administration Manager
